Children just need 'A Welcome Home'
This National Adoption Week, we’re tackling the misconceptions around needing a ‘perfect’ home to adopt a child, showing that children don’t need perfection — they just need a welcome home.
A child doesn’t just need a house, they need a home. That home doesn’t need to be ‘perfect’ to be a welcoming place for a child to find love, stability and belonging.
You can welcome a child into the heart of your home whether it’s owned or rented, big or small, or whether it’s just you, a partner, other children or your extended family.
Watch our short video to see adoptive families creating our ‘A Welcome Home’, sharing their everyday moments and memories of what makes their house a family home.
“One of the traditions we started when Andraya was younger was baking red velvet cupcakes together, and now it’s become our little ritual…”
“You’ll never feel completely ready to be a parent — but if your heart is open to it, don’t hold back. There’s no perfect setup — just love…”
“Every step, challenge, and moment of uncertainty brought us closer to our children – and now, we simply can’t imagine life without them…”
“Life used to be quiet, and our mornings were leisurely. Now our home is brilliantly loud from the moment she wakes up and it’s the best…”

National Adoption Week 2023 brought together adopted people from different generations to celebrate how adoption has evolved. National Adoption Week 2022 was focused on the importance of identity and relationships for adopted people. The campaign explored adopted people’s memories from before, during, and after they were adopted. Highlighting how it’s important for adopted people to feel connected to their past.
National Adoption Week 2021 was dedicated to all those impacted by adoption whose stories are often less heard; adopted people, adopters, birth parents and the Children’s Services workforce. The campaign shared real life stories from an adopted child, a single parent, an adopted person, a birth mother, social workers, and family members who watched loved ones go through the process.
