Meet Shamser, who adopted a son

Shamser had wanted to adopt for many years. Already a father to his birth son, he knew he was ready to welcome another child into his life. He had not met a partner with whom he wanted to grow his family, so he decided to begin the adoption journey on his own. In 2024, Shamser welcomed his son, Kusum, who was six and a half at the time, into his family through adoption.

Now aged nine, Kusum shares a busy family life with Shamser and his older brother, who is 14. The three of them enjoy exploring the outdoors and share a love of football. Since joining his local football team, Kusum has grown in confidence, learnt to communicate with his teammates and made good friends. He diligently practises his drills every day and has developed a real sense of belonging within his local community.

Kusum also enjoys practising maths at home, sometimes putting Shamser’s own skills to the test. On one occasion, Kusum set out to find the biggest number possible and added together every number he knew, reaching 99. The number may have been completely random, but it has earned a special place within the family, now being Kusum’s football jersey number.

Shamser believes these ordinary family moments are one of the most important ways to build a bond. Through shared routines and spending time together, he is able to show Kusum that he is loved, valued and part of a family that will always be there for him.

“People I meet are often surprised I’ve adopted on my own, but it’s a massive misconception that you need to be married or have a partner in order to adopt a child. I wanted to grow my family and knew there were plenty of children in need of a safe and loving home. I can’t imagine my life without my son and I’m so grateful for the joy he brings us.

If you’re thinking about adoption — just remember all the qualities and traits you can offer as a person.”
